FibreWorks Studio Workshops:
Singing the Blues - Indigo Dyeing with Ros Aylmer
DATE: July 3, 2010
INSTRUCTOR: Ros Aylmer
FEE: $40 drop in fee
Come and play for a few hours with an indigo vat that will be set up at FibreWorks – on the deck!
Bring your natural fibre yarns and fabrics (any natural fibres are OK - and yes all in the same vat - Indigo is unusual that way - will dye any natural fibre equally well) ready to dip - please no more than 1lb of fabric or yarn at a time; you will have the opportunity to dip several pieces, and work them from light to dark blue. This is not an instructed workshop – but you will learn how to work with natural indigo, and copies of the indigo recipe will be available.
Participants should bring sharpies, masking tape, and string, and should arrive with some prepared resists: tied or clamped. There will be some tools available on site as well as lots of ideas for resist patterning.
There is a $40 drop in fee to cover the cost of chemicals and setup.
(Registration is required to ensure that we have the appropriate vat setup.)

Imagination Workshop
DATE: July 14 , 15 & 16, 2010
INSTRUCTOR: Catherine Nicholls
FEE: $340.00 + HST
It’s time to find out those images you have tucked away- you know the ones! They are beautiful images of an inspiring subject and you have always wanted to do “something” with them- now’s the time!
This 3 day workshop will show you how to create your own designs from chosen images or sources of information. Day one will include a series of activities to develop your thoughts and ideas. Day 2 and 3 will involve students developing their own subject matter towards the goal of creating their own design and a finished piece. Students can chose to create multiple designs and work only on paper with art products or move their design to fabric.
This workshop is for students ready to develop their own ideas – we will look at how your work can be inspired by personal sources, how to develop those ideas and how to extend your personal creativity.
Supply List:
“To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” Thomas Edison
Those beautiful images of an inspiring subject and you have always wanted to work with! Spend some time thinking about this if you can- 3 days is a long time to be working on a subject if you aren’t excited about it! Bring three or four copies of your favourite image and a few copies of any supporting images- other angles or similar images, close up and distance shots.
- Any sketchbook work or development you may have already started!
- Basic design kit and basic sewing kit- (next page)
- Most importantly bring along your courage to try new things, your intuition and your sense of humour!
Let me know if you have any questions at all or would like some guidance on theme or supplies-
I am happy to discuss any ideas you have.

Supply List:
This workshop will show you how to create your own designs from images and includes simple pen and ink technique, painting on fabric and all the ideas you’ll need to create your own projects. You can add your own drawings or one of mine to quilts, bags, and anything you create with fabric!
I will be bringing some of my own patterns which you are welcome to use but if you have a theme you would like to work with I would be happy to help you to create your own design! Make sure you bring multiple copies of images of your theme and your supplies are in keeping with the colour scheme you will want to work in- or the colour scheme in your chosen images.
- Ink pens…I like technical pens, but dip pens will work as well- (I am afraid of the drips!) Whatever type of pen you chose make sure it is waterproof so you can paint later.
- For detailed work the size I prefer is 03 or 05
- Micron 05 #1 Archival Pen- it is acid free, waterproof and fade proof.
Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen- it is Indian ink, waterproof and maximum lightafstness.
- For broader marks I use various sizes of Sharpie pens, all Sharpies are permanent markers and what they call a fine tip are actually quite bold compared to the 03 and 05 size.
- Keep an eye out for different colours- black is classic but other colours might work well for your drawing. Bring a few different pens if you like, but please make sure you have 2 black fine tip 03 or 05 sizes.
- Light box- a light box is handy but not essential- a bright window will do the trick
- Paper for developing and practicing your drawing, I always work in my sketchbook – I will bring a roll of paper for full scale drawings.
- Graphite pencil, HB is fine.
- Fabric – a few pieces of closely woven, pale coloured fabric, very pale hand dyes will work, as will pale neutral colours, make them each about 20”X 20” ( or a size to make whatever you think you might want to make!) One of these is for practice only!
- You will be drawing onto these pieces of fabric, so no prints and keep the colours pale or all your beautiful drawing will be lost. You may not use all of the pieces during the class.
If you want to paint your pen and ink designs:
- ½ or ¾ inch angled edge paint brush, a detail brush and a wash brush
- Small stencil brush or a brush with stiff bristles
- Water container – small yogurt pots work well
- Palette for blending – a paper palette will work fine
- Blue (non-shedding) paper towel
- Paint- if you have a theme- then bring a few paints in those colours. I will be bringing a collection of paints, watercolour pencils and miscellaneous colours for everyone to share.
- Fabric or quilt top to drawn onto If you are working towards a small quilt or other finished piece- then please bring the fabric you would like to work with for that project- for example my cherry blossom quilt starts with a foundation pieced quilt top- not layered or quilted!
Let me know if you have any questions at all or would like some guidance on theme or supplies-
I am happy to discuss any ideas you have!
