Local History and Interesting Places to See
The history of the Sunshine Coast is long, varied and interesting. For example, Pender Harbour was once the primary wintering place for the Coast Salish people. Local legend says that the first non-native person to live in the Pender Harbour area was a Chinese who started a fish salting business near Irvine’s Landing, but Charlie Irvine (for whom the landing is named) is generally identified as the first settler.
These facts about Pender Harbour and all of the communities on the Sunshine Coast can be explored at the Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives in Gibsons.
